Sixty-five-year-old Jamshed Ali, who was rescued at a critical condition from his flat in Ulwe on Friday afternoon, died in NMMC hospital in Vashi the same day evening. The exact reason of his death has not been understood as the doctors are yet to conduct the postmortem.

Ali kept struggling for life for nearly 15 hours before the police broke open the door of his flat. The NRI police were informed about the incident by dna of navi mumbai, but the police took nearly two hours to reach the spot. Ali was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, where he died after a few hours.

"Ali did not have the habit of drinking, but he would smoke. I did not know if he had any serious disease. All his family members stay in the United States and Australia. He had come to me around six months ago and I made the agreement of his rented flat. One family from the same building would provide him food everyday," said Jeevan Chakraborty, his real estate agent.

When asked the reason behind the delay, the NRI police said they did not have vehicles to reach the spot. Deputy commissioner of police Shahaji Umap (zone 1) has promised to look into the matter and take the requisite measures.

"Ali was battling for life for a long time. His neighbours also did not take any step to save his life, despite being aware that he was critical. Had he been rescued a few hours earlier, probably he would have survived," Chakraborty added.

Devasish Roy, Ali's brother's friend who stays in Peddar Road, said, "I have informed Ali's brother about his death. His brother runs a travel agency in the US. I will discuss the whole matter with him once again and then do the needful."
