A man fed up with his verbally abusive wife and his uncooperative in-laws was granted relief in the family court recently. The court accepted the man's petition that he had undergone mental tension and agony because of his wife, and granted him divorce.

The petition said the couple, who married in Kolhapur in May 2009, and moved to Mumbai afterwards, were never happy together. From the first day, the wife picked quarrels with and abused the husband in "the most filthy words". Moreover, the wife refused-- said the petition-- when the man requested her to help his mother with household chores.

A few days into married life, the man suspected that his wife suffered from a mental illness. So he called up his mother-in-law seeking her help with her daughter; she said that she would take her daughter to Kolhapur and would get her treated there.

The man, in his petition, further claimed that when he visited his wife's maternal house in Kolhapur to ascertain her condition, he was shocked to see her unchanged. He then realised that his in-laws had not provided her with medical treatment. His in-laws informed him that they had approached a local witch doctor (tantrik) for treatment.

The petition said that the man's in-laws then demanded he pay for the costs of hiring the tantrik.

Hearing this, the man felt cheated by his wife and in-laws, the petition further claimed.

The man further claimed that in May 2011, when he had been to his wife's house, her uncle had threatened him with dire consequences.

After going through the petition, the court asked the woman to file her reply, but she never contested the claims.
