Nandkishore, the 60-year-old who was thrown out of a running train between Dombivli and Thakurli railway stations on Friday around 8pm, is recuperating in Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, where his right hand was operated on.

Nandkishore, who works as a hawaldar in Thane court, has head injuries (60 stitches), fractured his right hand and has scratches all over his body. He was heading for his home in Mahral village, Shahad when he fell off the train.

A passerby who heard him fall, rushed to the spot and informed the Dombivli GRP, who took the unconscious man to Shastri Nagar hospital in Dombivli. After first aid, the victim was shifted to Sai Shraddha Hospital in Kalyan and later for operation, to Fortis Kalyan.

The man accused of pushing him, Mohammed Azad Alam, 20, was traced in a few minutes and booked under section 307 (attempt to murder) and under the Indian Railway Act of IPC.

Alam was heading for Bhiwandi to meet his father, who is said to be ill. He had two bags with him. He's working as a tailor in Mumbai and has been staying in Mahim-Dharavi area for the last few years. Alam was produced in court and remanded in police custody till January 13.

Advocate Sagar Joshi, 26, the victim's grandson, said: "We got a call around 8.30pm informing us that Nandkishore had fallen from a train. At the hospital, our grandfather told us that he had been "standing at Dombivli railway station to board the Kasara local. I felt a bit dizzy and sat down for a while. When the train came, I climbed into the coach in front of me. As I was moving inside, a bag hit my leg, so I asked the person in front of me to move aside. He was young. He then asked me why I had got into the luggage coach. Soon an argument ensued and a third person intervened and hit the young lad on his head. The youngster got angry and pushed me out of the train".

According to Sagar, his grandfather had got into the 7.02pm local at Thane and had got down at Dombivli and caught the fast local to Kasara from there. "My grandfather is unconscious and we are bearing all the expenses. He will retire in April. All his colleagues have been very cooperative. We have come to know that we won't get any compensation."

Sudha Joshi, Nandkishore's wife who is in her 60s, said: "The accused should be punished severely so that he doesn't do anything like this in the future."
