Man poses as gas company employee, snatches woman's chain in her home

The Samta Nagar police are on the lookout for an unknown person who entered the flat of an elderly woman on Wednesday, claiming to be an employee of a company that supplied piped gas to the flat, and allegedly fled with a gold chain worth Rs60,000 after threatening her.

According to the police, the theft occurred around 4.40pm on Wednesday, in the apartment of Swati Joshi, 57, at Dattani Park, opposite Saidham Mandir in Kandivli (E).

"As per Joshi, on hearing the door bell she opened the door. An unknown person in his mid-twenties was standing at the door claiming to be a worker from Mahanagar Gas Ltd and wanted to read the gas meter. As she opened the door, he forcefully entered the flat and pushed her on the floor. He snatched the mangalsutra Joshi was wearing and ran away," said an officer from Samta Nagar police station.

"Joshi has given us the description of the accused. To ensure nobody suspected him, the culprit had impersonated a gas company employee. We are probing the case from all angles," said Ravindra Patil, senior police inspector of Samta Nagar police station.
