A Mulund resident allegedly strangled his wife with a handkerchief in their home on Saturday and, five hours later, surrendered before the police. He suspected her of having an affair.
Dnyaneshwar Tukaram Sarode, 28, is said to have told the police that after killing his wife Shilpa, 18, he panicked that he would be arrested. So he left home and went to the tracks near Mulund railway station to end his life. He said two trains passed by, but he couldn’t muster the courage and went back home. He then decided to jump in the well near his house, but couldn’t do that either. Hence, finally, he decided to surrender to the police.
“Dnyaneshwar Tukaram Sarode, was booked under section 302 (Murder) IPC and was remanded in police custody for three days. He worked as a delivery boy at a pathology centre in Mulund. He admitted to having murdered Shilpa,” said inspector Mahesh Mugutrao of Mulund police station
Mugutrao added that Dnyaneshwar was an alcoholic. He suspected his wife’s character and harassed her physically too.
Dnyaneshwar married Shilpa in April 2012. His parents and other family members lived on the mezzanine floor of the same house at Ramgadh slum colony in Mulund (West). The couple used to quarrel often, as Dnyanes-hwar did not like the food she cooked. He also objected to her habit of chewing gutkha.
On Friday, the couple went for a stroll after dinner, but ended up fighting. Shilpa went to bed after coming back. Around 12.30am on Saturday, Dnyaneshwar allegedly strangled her with his handkerchief.
