At 6am on Saturday, a 23-year-old nurse was molested and beaten by a 27-year-old Kurla resident in the second class compartment of a Borivli bound train.
The victim boarded the empty ladies compartment from Mahalaxmi Station to go to Matunga, where she works in a well known private hospital.
Narrating the incident, victim’s elder brother Ajit (name changed) said, “My younger sister boarded the second class ladies compartment of Borivli train at Mahalaxmi Station at 5.50 am and there was no GRP personnel in the compartment.”
The accused got into the train when he saw the compartment had no GRP personnel. The accused groped the victim and when she resisted he slapped her and attempted to push her out of the running train.
As the train rolled into Lower Parel station, the commuters on the platform were alerted by the victim’s screams and managed to nab the molester after a short chase. He was handed over to the GRP personnel at Lower Parel, who later identified him as Devraj Hanumanta Kanka, a resident of a slum in Bail Bazar, Kurla (west).
“Kanka has been booked under section 354 (Outraging the modesty of a woman) and 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC,” said Prakash Bijwe, assistant commissioner of police (Bandra Railway Division).
Meanwhile, the GRP constable attached to the Borivli GRP station who was assigned the escort duty from Friday 8 pm to Saturday 8 am in the ladies compartment in which the incident took place was suspended. “Devendra Shinde, a GRP constable on escort duty was placed under suspension on Saturday afternoon as he wasn’t present on duty. The molester would not have dared to enter the ladies compartment if the constable was on duty,” said BN Sirsat, deputy commissioner of police ( Western Railway Zone) of Mumbai GRP.
