A 21-year-old, who jumped off Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) on Thursday – presumably in an act of suicide – was found alive three hours later at Dadar chowpatty. Nikhar Jagdeesh Sahu is a resident of Fatehpur district in Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, Sahu took a cab from Bandra at around 11 am and alighted in the middle of Sea Link at around 11.30 am, telling the cabbie he wanted to click a selfie. He swiftly jumped off the bridge, and the driver immediately informed the security personnel present at the bridge.

Worli police, along with the fire brigade, rushed to the spot and began the search operation which lasted for over three hours. Around 4 pm, Sahu was fished out by fishermen at Dadar chowpatty. He was rushed to Sion hospital and has been admitted to the ICU.

"When he was brought to the hospital," said Dr Jayshree Mondkar, Medical Superintendent of Sion hospital, "His body – from the face to the abdomen – was swollen and he was suffering from breathlessness. However, he is out of danger and stable now." He has been identified by the cab driver.

"We thought he must have drowned as it had been more than three hours since he jumped. We were shocked to find him," said Gangadhar Sonawane, Senior Police Inspector of Shivaji Park Police Station. Gajanan Desurkar, Senior Police Inspector of Worli Police Station said, "Sahu had booked a return journey cab from Bandra to Worli via Sea Link. Cars are not allowed to stop on BWSL. We will take the necessary action against the cab driver under Motor Vehicle Act. The exact cause of this act will be known only after we take Sahu's statement. Currently, he is not in a condition to speak."
