The Kalachowkie police have arrested a man for using a clone credit card. The police suspect that the accused is part of a gang that gets card details from their foreign-based counterparts and use them here. Interestingly, the accused had used the card 38 times in a bar in past two months, police said.

The arrested person has been identified as Mahipal Vyas.

According to police sources, cloned cards having details of United Kingdom- based customers of an international bank were being used in Mumbai. "When the vigilance department of the bank learnt about this, they started studying transaction details of the card. The details revealed that the card was being used in a bar during a specific period in the evening," said a police officer, requesting anonymity.

He added that bank officials visited the bar and informed the bar staff that the card holder is not the actual owner and asked them to alert them if he visits again. "The accused visited the bar again, but this time the bank officials and bar staff were ready. As soon as the accused used the card in his possession, he was caught. Vyas was then handed over to the Kalachowie police," the officer said.

Investigations revealed that Vyas had used the said card on 36 occasions to consume alcohol in the bar since past two months. As per the police, the fraud is worth Rs63,945. Vyas was booked under sections 419 (impersonation) and 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for cheating), 471 (using genuine document for fraud) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 66C (whoever fraudulently or dishonestly makes use of electronic signature, password or any other unique identification feature of any other person) and 66D (whoever by means of any communication device or computer resource cheats by impersonation) of the Information Technology Act.
"We are investigating whether more persons are involved in this case and how the data was stolen of the foreign based customers," said the officer.
