A mobile number, written on a newspaper, helped the police solve a murder case. A 23-year-old girl, who had sustained burn injuries told her brother before her death that an unknown man had tried to force himself upon her, and on resisting, the man poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. The police then launched a probe and apprehended the suspect on Saturday.

The arrested person has been identified as Mohammed Ajmal Salim Siddiqui (28), a carpenter and resident of Malwani.

According to the police, on December 17, around 6.30 pm, complainant Mohammed Arshi Javed Shaikh (27), who works in Mahavir Nagar in Kandivli received a call from his mother, who lives in Bihar, informing him about the fire that occurred at his Malwani residence.

Shaikh immediately called up his brother-in-law Naushad Alam, also a Malwani resident, and informed him about the incident. Shaikh told Alam to visit his house. Later, Shaikh visited the house where he learnt that his younger sister Shamaparveen (unmarried), sustained burns and has been taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli, police said.

The complainant then visited the hospital and learnt that Shamaparveen had sustained 100% burns.

"According to Shaikh, Shamaparveen told him that around 6.30 pm, when she was alone at home, an unknown person entered and tried to force himself upon her. When the victim tried to resist and flee, the unknown man poured kerosene on her and set her on fire," said an officer from Malwani police station.

Shaikh then approached the police and was informed about the rape, and outraging the modesty and attempt to commit murder lodged.

On December 18, Shamaparveen succumbed to her injuries during treatment, after which the police slapped murder section in the case.

"During a panchnama of the spot two used condoms were found in the dustbin of the house. We also found a mobile number written on a newspaper at the spot. While probing, one discovered the involvement of Siddiqui in the case. Siddqui claims that he knew the victim for the past two months and they were in regular touch with each other. Though he claims that the two had sex, he denies having set the victim on fire," said the officer.

According to the police, Siddiqui did not report to work for 15 days. "There are several unanswered questions left such as why Shamaparveen did not disclose Siddiqui's name and shielded him? If at all Siddqui set Shamaparveen on fire, then what was the reason? Did Shamaparveen set herself on fire?" the officer said.

"We are talking to Siddique for dna profiling on Monday. The probe is still under way. Siddiqui was produced before a court, which remanded him to police custody till December 28," said senior police inspector Milind Khetle of Malwani police station.
