An Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) team on Tuesday morning arrested a man who had allegedly made a hoax call to the police stating that a bomb had been planted in Borivli court. A probe revealed that the court had expedited proceedings already underway against the accused and he made the call since he did not want to attend regular court proceedings.

The arrested person has been identified as Sandip Tansukhlal Baria (52), a resident of Nalasopara.

According to the police, around 2:30pm on Monday, an unknown person called the police control room. The caller said that a bomb has been placed in court room number 24 of the Borivli magistrate court. On getting this information, the Borivli police, along with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, reached the court, but no explosive item was detected there. Later, the ATS found out that the call was made from a public call office booth near a cinema hall at Grant Road (W). The CCTV footage of the spot gave the ATS a clue about the caller.

Senior police inspector Subhash Sawant of the Charkop unit of the ATS said: "Based on technical intelligence, we learnt that the caller was one Sandip Baria, who has criminal cases registered against him at Malad and VP Road police stations. He was then traced to Nalasopara on Tuesday and was taken into custody. Baria admitted his crime and told the police that he did not want the magistrate court hearings — taking place due to the complaints filed in Malad police station — to occur frequently as he was unable to pay the fees of the advocates defending him. On Tuesday, in order to avoid a court hearing, he made a hoax call to the police so that the proceedings get delayed. Baria also used to sell tickets in black outside the cinema hall at Grant Road."

After his interrogation, Baria was handed over to the Borivli police. He has been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for providing false information to the police, said Gunaji Sawant, senior inspector, Borivli police station.
