A 48-year-old man has been arrested by the Azad Maidan police on Saturday for allegedly duping a housewife to the tune of Rs1.62 lakh on the pretext of providing her son a job in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
The arrested person has been identified as Vinod Waghela, a resident of Thane and a native of Gujarat.

According to the police, complainant Darshana Gujar, 45, is a resident of Virar (East). "Waghela is an acquaintance of the Gujar family and they know him as a clerk in the BMC. In November last year, Waghela had told Darshana that he can get her son a job in BMC for Rs1.50 lakh," said an officer from Azad Maidan police station.

On November 20, Waghela met Darshana and her son Dipesh near the BMC headquarters near Azad Maidan. "Waghela took Rs1.50 lakh and an additional Rs12,000 for medical test. He made Dipesh fill up a form and took a medical certificate from him. Later, Waghela called up Darshana and said the joining letter will be couriered to them. However, since December 27, Waghela's phone remained switched off," the officer added.

After realising that they were cheated, Darshana lodged a police complaint. On monitoring his mobile phone details, the police managed to trace Waghela and apprehended him. He has been booked on charges of cheating.

"We are yet to recover the money from him. We are also trying to find out from where he sourced the bogus BMC documents and seals and whether more people are involved with him," said the officer.
