A 44-year-old man has been arrested by the city crime branch sleuths from Nashik for allegedly duping a Thane zilla parishad health department officer to the tune of Rs4 lakh by promising jobs for his son and daughter-in-law in BMC.

The arrested person has been identified as Vijay Donde alias Shelar, a resident of Nashik.

According to the crime branch, complainant RD Jadhav, 50, is a resident of Pune. A devotee of Lord Krishna, he also sells religious books in trains whenever he travels between Mumbai and Pune.

"During one such visit in train he met Shelar, who told him that he was working with BMC's labour department. Shelar also claimed that posts of sipahi and stenographer are vacant in BMC and that he can help Jadhav secure these jobs for his family members," said a crime branch officer.

Jadhav fell into Shelar's trap. On May 28, 2014, he met Shelar in BMC canteen with his son and daughter-in-law and handed over the two's documents to him. Shelar then allegedly pretended to go to show the documents to some senior BMC official and returned saying interviews had been fixed for June 3," the officer said.

On June 6, Jadhav and family members met Shelar and gave him Rs4 lakh, which the latter had asked for saying it was required to get the job. "Shelar made the three wait near a bus stop outside BMC and escaped through one of the nearby lanes. After having learnt that they have been duped, the family had then lodged a complaint with the Azad Maidan police," said the officer.

"On receipt of specific information, Shelar was apprehended from Nashik; he has been handed over to the Azad Maidan police for further probe," said deputy commissioner of police, detection, Dhananjay Kulkarni.
