Man held for duping Mumbai jewellers posing as a cop

Crime branch sleuths on Thursday arrested one Aqeel Asgar Ali Sayyed, who had duped several jewellers in the city posing as a policeman.

The accused would masquerade as a policeman and visit jewellery shops, buy some ornaments, which he would take along with him after giving the merchant some money as advance, and then vanish. According to the police the accused is involved in 22 such cases and is wanted in seven of them. Sayyed, 36, is a resident of Jogeshwari.

According to additional commissioner of police (crime) KMM Prasanna, the Anti-Robbery & Dacoity Squad of the police received specific information that a man who used to pose as a police officer and had duped several jewellers would be arriving in Jogeshwari area. The police then laid a trap and arrested Sayyed.

"The accused is well versed in Hindi and Marathi. He would visit jewellery shops posing as a police officer, buy jewellery, give them some money as advance, and take the jewellery along," said assistant commissioner of police Praful Bhosale.

Investigations have revealed that Sayyed was involved in such cases in Andheri, Goregaon, Shahu Nagar, Kanjur Marg, Bhandup, Parsite, Kandivli, Vakola and Mira Road, said police inspector Ashok Khot.

"The accused has committed 30 such offences and is wanted in seven of those cases. He has been active since the past eight years and has duped several jewellers of a total Rs 10 lakh," said a police officer.
