Nagpada police on Friday arrested a 39-year-old man for duping a Kurla-based shop owner of Rs23 lakh. The accused had taken the money from the complainant after promising him a flat in Navi Mumbai.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Afzal Ali Sayyed (39), had met the victim Abdul Hasan Shaikh around a month and a half ago, through a common friend. Sayyed had told Shaikh that he has good connections in the real estate industry, and can get him cheap housing at Vashi in Navi Mumbai.

An officer with Nagpada police said: "To gain trust of the victim, the accused took him around a few places and showed him flats in Navi Mumbai. The complainant finalised on a house, after which the talks about the money started."

On Friday morning, Sayyed asked Shaikh to meet him with Rs23 lakh in cash outside Navjeevan Co-operative society in Mumbai Central.

"When the duo met, Sayyed took the cash from Shaikh and asked him to wait at the gate of the society. He said he would return after handing over the cash to the people who were arranging for the flats," said deputy commissioner of police (zone III) S Jayakumar.

He added: "After that, Sayyed vanished and the complainant, after waiting for a long time, became suspicious and approached the police."

After the registering the FIR, the Nagpada police immediately started their investigation and arrested Sayyed from his father-in-laws residence.

"We procured the CCTV images from the area and got Sayyed's photo. Later, through technical assistance, we tracked him down and arrested him," informed Jayakumar.
