The MRA Marg police recently arrested a 54-year-old man who duped a man to the tune of Rs60,000 by posing as a police officer.

The accused, Ismail Hasan, is a resident of Kalyan. He was arrested on May 12 after the complainant approached the police, who laid a trap.

According to the police, about a month and a half ago, the complainant, a tanker driver, was on his way from Pune to JNPT to pick up an oil consignment when he met Hasan on the way.

Hasan asked the driver to drop him to Mumbai and he agreed. Hasan told him he was a police sub-inspector attached to Wadala police station and shared his mobile phone number.

Hasan also told the driver that he had good contacts at Union Bank and could help him to get a job at the bank or in a government office.

On May 1, the driver called Hasan and they decided to meet near Manish Market. He was to carry some documents and Rs11,000. Hasan gave the driver a bank letter. After that they met on four occasions and the driver gave Hasan a total Rs60,000.

When the driver approached the bank he realised that it was a fake. The driver called Hasan about this and he promised to pay back Rs10,000 in his account. However, he did not do that.

The police arrested Hasan on charges of cheating and impersonation. They are also checking whether there are any previous cases against Hasan.
