The Antop Hill police on Saturday arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly duping a senior citizen on the pretext of providing his son admission in a reputed institute for an MBA course. The police suspect involvement of two more persons in the fraud and are investigating the case further.
The arrested person has been identified as Sunilratna Athawle, a resident of Khar (W).
According to the police, the complainant in the case is a 61-year old resident of Antop Hill. The complainant intended to get his son admitted in a reputed institute to pursue his dream of completing an MBA course.
"Athawle and his accomplices, whom are known to the complainant, had assured him that they would get his son's admission done in the month of May in a reputed institute in Vidyavihar. For this purpose, Athawle had taken Rs 7.14 lakh from the complainant," said an officer from Antop Hill police station.
As per the police, Rs 5 lakh were paid through cheques to Athawle. "Interestingly, while accepting the money, Athawle had also given a written assurance to provide admission in the institute. When Athawle could not provide admission in May this year, the complainant asked back for his money. Of the taken amount, Athawle gave back Rs 2.85 lakh, but started avoiding him later over the issue of paying the remaining amount," the officer said.
The complainant waited till October for Athawle to make the repayment, but when the former could not do so, the victim lodged a police complaint. "Based on the complaint, Athawle was arrested on Saturday. He was produced before the court and has been remanded to police custody till December 24," said the officer.
