Man held for attempting to attack Bohra community leader with knife

The attacker, identified as Rizwan Lakdawala, reportedly has his residence in the property which is a part of the cluster redevelopment in the area.

Major tension prevailed in Byculla on Tuesday night after locals caught a man wielding a knife while approaching Qaidjohar Ezzuddin, brother of Syedna, the chief of  . Ezzuddin is in-charge of the Bohra community's redevelopment project at Bhendi Bazaar, which is being carried out by the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust of which he is the chairman.

The attacker, identified as Rizwan Lakdawala, reportedly has his residence in the property which is a part of the cluster redevelopment in the area.

According to the police, around 11pm, when Ezzuddin had stepped out from the Hindu Mill Compound after performing namaaz, Lakdawala approached him with a knife. This led to chaos in the area and soon the police were informed. Senior officers rushed to the spot to ensure there was no law and order situation due to the incident. The police also took measures through social media to ensure that rumours are not spread about communal tension in the locality.

"Lakdawala was caught with a knife. He has been arrested on the charge of attempt to commit murder. He was produced before a court on Wednesday and has been remanded in police custody till June 26. We suspect that Lakdawala has some grudge against Ezzuddin and approached him for confrontation. We are probing the case from all angles," said senior inspector Avinash Shingte of Byculla police station. Spokesperson for the Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust did not answer calls.
