Dongri police have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly stealing Rs 1.25 crore from his employer, who had given the money to a travel company in a box saying it contains crockery and Rs 3 lakh on Saturday.

However, when the owner lodged the complaint with the police and they recovered the parcel after arresting the accused, they found that cash worth Rs 1.25 crore was found in the box.

Police suspect that the money is linked with the hawala racket and have informed the Income Tax (I-T) department to inquire into the matter.

According to police, the complainant Jaffar Lakdawala, had given Bhagwati travels a parcel to send to Goa on Saturday. After a few hours, the accused, Yasin Shaikh went to travel company's office and asked them to return the box saying his owner had asked for the parcel back urgently. The travel worker handed over the box to Shaikh who was planning to flee with the money. The incident came to light when the travel owner called up Lakdawala stating that the box had been returned to his employee, whose name they didn't know. Lakdawala then immediately approached the police and registered a case of cheating.

"Lakdawala told us that there was some crockery and Rs 3 lakh however when we recovered the box from the accused we found Rs 1.25 crore. We are conducting an inquiry about the money and into Lakdawala, and have informed the I-T department of the amount. We suspect it is part of the hawala racket," said Manoj Kumar Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police zone 1.
