The Kalachowky police on Saturday arrested a man from Gujarat for allegedly duping a member of Mumbai Coin Society (MCS) to the tune of Rs1.16 lakh on the pretext of providing him three rare notes. When the victim was given the notes, he realised that they were counterfeit.

The arrested person has been identified as Pranav Mehta alias Anand alias Devpratap Singh, a resident of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The police have seized Rs70,000 in cash from Mehta.

According to the police, the complainant (name withheld) is into buying, selling and collecting rare notes and coins. He has been buying rare Indian and foreign currency notes for 12 years.
In August last year, while going through an online shopping portal, the victim found that a rare ten rupee note dated 1960, signed by the then RBI governor LK Jha, was up for sale. He then contacted the mobile number of the seller and got the deal done for Rs45,000 for the note.

Later, a person by the name of Anand Mehta got into a deal with the victim for a Persian Gulf note and a pre-independence five rupee Indian note containing the photograph of King George. In order to get these notes, the victim had deposited Rs1.16 lakh in the bank account referred by Mehta.

However, even after having deposited the notes, Mehta didn't provide the notes to the victim and avoided meeting him. Irked with this delay, the victim told Mehta to cancel the deal and return the money. Mehta assured victim that he would send the notes, police said.

On September 5, the victim received a parcel from Mehta, which contained a laminated five rupee note. "When the victim got the authenticity of the note checked with the MCS, he was told that it was a fake. The victim then got a police complaint lodged against Mehta," said an officer from Kalachowkie police station.

He added that, on the basis of the said complaint, Mehta was arrested by a police team from Ahmedabad on Saturday. "Mehta has been booked on charges of cheating under relevant sections of the IPC and Information Technology Act," the officer said.
