Desperate to fund his habit of visiting prostitutes, a Girgaum resident staged his own kidnap to extract money from his wife. But the plan fizzled out when the Crime Branch cracked the case and tracked him in 36 hours. The man, however, turned out to be luckier than he would have ever imagined, thanks to his wife who didn't press for a case.

According to Crime Branch sources, Neelu Pandey (name changed), had undergone a surgery operation a few days ago. At that time, her brother, who has a transport business, mother and sister had arrived with Rs 4 lakh from Kanpur. The family spent Rs2 lakh on the procedure.

"Her husband Anil, who works in a saree showroom had left home, saying he would be going to Dahanu to collect payment from clients, but did not return till next day. Later in the day, Neelu received a call from an unknown number. The caller told her that Anil had been abducted and wanted a ransom of Rs 2 lakh. The caller also threatened Neelu not to inform the police," said a source.

The family approached the VP Road police and the Crime Branch's anti-extortion cell. Two parallel probes were launched. "The number from which the call was made was switched off. When we got call detail records of that number, most callers on it turned out to be pimps from Mumbai central area. One of the pimps told us that it belonged to a prostitute," said the source.

The cops activated informers and traced the call girl. They found a slozzed Anil with her. "Anil said that he was addicted to visiting prostitutes and wanted money for the same. He also told the police that he only had made the call to his wife by changing his voice," he said. Neelu was shocked when cops told her about Anil. "But she refused to lodge a complaint."

Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sadanand Date said, "Cases involving threat to life are taken seriously and we try our best to detect them in the shortest possible time."
