The MHB Colony police in Borivali have arrested a 43-year-old man, who allegedly cheated more than 50 people to the tune of several lakhs by promising them easy car loans. The accused, identified as Ashok Shinde alias Sunil Patil, had been conning people for the last two years, said the police.
Shinde used to create fake online accounts on Just Dial and advertise for 'hassle-free' purchase of car and loans in the name of Shivam Motor Cars situated in Kandivali.
In November 2013, the MHB Colony police received a complaint from a merchant navy officer, Christopher D'Çosta against Shinde. Cops soon found that several complaints were filed against Shinde in Andheri and Kandivali.
Jaivijay Bodke, API of MHB colony police said, "D'Costa had approached Shinde for a car loan after seeing the ad. While he showed D'Costa fake loan documents, he made the merchant navy officer transfer Rs2.8 lakh into his account and promised to get the car delivered in 10 days." But D'Costa never received the car. When he went to his office, he found it was locked.
Bodke said they started tracking Shinde's mobile phone and managed to nab him on Wednesday. He is a resident of Malwani, where he lives with his family.
