The father of a two-year-old Muslim girl has lodged a police complaint against a private playgroup in Borivli for allegedly discriminating against them on the basis of religion.

Mohammed Nawaz Doli had admitted his daughter in the playgroup as it was close to his residence in Borivli, but soon noticed the playgroup owner’s odd behaviour.

“They told us to bring our child half an hour early to the school and come to pick her up half an hour late. The owner clearly told us that since most of the parents were Gujaratis and Jains, they would object to having a Muslim child amongst their children,’’ Doli said.

He also claimed that the school authorities never called them for any parents’ meeting. “While other children were taking part in various activities, my child was treated differently, which is a racist act,’’ he said.

When contacted, the school owner admitted that she had asked the parents to send their daughter earlier than other children as other parents were not happy of having a Muslim child in their midst.

‘’It was affecting our business. The child’s lungi-clad grandfather would eat paan outside the playgroup. This affected other parents and they had a problem allowing their children to be in a school that admits such people. I have nothing against the Muslims nor did I discriminate against them. I liked this family and was only trying to find a middle ground for them,’’ she said.

However, the parents took out the child from the playgroup and lodged a police complaint.
