A Goregaon resident had recently lodged a complaint with the Jogeshwari police claiming he was robbed by three men, who said they were policemen and snatched away his cash and mobile phones. However, the police have found several loopholes in his statement, one being the place where the alleged incident occurred has several residences around and none of the 16 locals examined by the police said they were aware of such a thing happening.

The police suspect the man, Surendra Vishwakarma, has lodged a false complaint. If this suspicion is found to be true, they police are contemplating lodging a case against him for misguiding the police and lodging a false complaint.

According to senior inspector Pradeep Kale of Jogeshwari police station, Vishwakarma had approached the police on Thursday morning claiming he was beaten and robbed by three unknown men. Vishwakarma had claimed that the men had snatched away his two mobile phones and Rs4,000 cash. Based on his complaint, the police registered a case of robbery.

"Vishwakarma claimed he had gone to Delhi for office work and got down at Borivli station from Dehradun Express. He said he then took a local train from Borivli and got down at Jogeshwari. But why did he get down at Jogeshwari and not Goregaon? Vishwakarma then took an autorickshaw from Jogeshwari and got down at JVLR Junction. He then decided to walk back to Jogeshwari station. Why did he do all this is what we are wondering," said Kale.

As per Vishwakarma, while he was en route to station, three unknown men blocked his way. "Vishwakarma says the trio claimed to be policemen and, on the pretext of searching his belongings, forcibly took away his valuables. He also said one of them was wearing a half pant. Following these claims, we went to the spot. There are several residences around, but none of the residents heard or saw anything resembling Vishwakarma's claims," said Kale.

"We believe he is not telling us the whole story... if our suspicions are confirmed, we will file a case against him. Our team has spent several hours on this case," said another police officer.
