The Nagpada police on Thursday arrested a senior citizen named Ahmed Sayyed, who claimed to be a distant relative of the Jharkhand governor, for allegedly encroaching on a property on Bellasis Road in Nagpada. Sayyed, though, claimed that he had owned the property since 2013.

According to Nagpada police, Sayyed (65) began living in the flat since 2013, after he allegedly buying it with fake documents. "It was revealed during the investigation that the flat had been bought by a woman, Seema Attarwala, in 2012. She lives in Malaysia, and ever since she bought the flat, she had kept it locked. Sayyed, who gained entry into the flat, incorrectly claimed that he had bought the house from his first wife's (who is now deceased) distant relative," said Shivaji Kadam, the senior police inspector with Nagpada police station. He added "The problem started when Attarwala returned from Malaysia, and claimed that she had bought the flat from one Fatima Shaikh, Sayyed's third wife, in 2012."

The police claimed that police have verified the documents of both Attarwala and Ahmed, and suspect that Sayyed's transaction was illegal. Police further stated that Sayyed is accused of not only taking control of the property illegally, but also of stealing whatever furniture was kept in the flat.

He was arrested on Tuesday after his anticipatory bail was rejected, and has been remanded to police custody until April 4.
