The next time you get into a casual discussion with a stranger on the train, be careful. The person could very well be a con artist.
A 29-year-old Kalyan resident learned this after Hitesh Sanghvi alias Jain (37), whom he befriended during a train journey, duped him to the tune of Rs1.61lakh on the pretext of providing him a job with the Railways.
According to the MRA Marg police, Vivek Shelotkar, a student, had met Sanghvi during a train journey from Jalgaon to Mumbai. Sanghvi claimed he handled the electrical works contracts of Central Railway (CR). He also claimed to know senior CR officials. Shelotkar was impressed and the two soon became good friends.
Sanghvi, a Ghansoli resident, later lured the victim, saying that he would get the victim a ticket checker’s job with the CR, and sought Rs2 lakh for the same.
“Sanghvi also called two persons, whom, he claimed, he got railway jobs, and asked them to talk to the victim. The two persons convinced the victim that Sanghvi was not a conman,” said an officer of MRA Marg police station.
The victim then gave Rs1.61lakh to Sanghvi, after which the latter stopped meeting the victim and started giving excuses whenever the victim asked for his money and job.
Sensing he has been duped, the victim registered a complaint with MRA Marg police. “Sanghvi was arrested on October 26. We recovered Rs50,000 from him. We have information that Sanghvi has duped others in a similar fashion,” the officer said.
All for a job
