A 45-year-old man allegedly tried to end his life inside Shil Daighar police station after locals held him for assaulting NMMT driver and blocking the entire road by stopping the bus which was heading towards Dombivli.

Umar Kader, a resident of Shil Phata, along with his friend, was at Kalyan when they halted the Dombivli-bound NMMT bus. The driver, Bhaskar Arote, informed him about the route, but he and his friend suddenly jumped out of the bus.

"After jumping out, they again boarded the bus, assaulted and obstructed the driver and conductor. Commuters informed us about the incident and we rushed to the spot and arrested them," said an officer.

"When they were questioned, the accused started abusing our officers and threatened us. Suddenly Kader banged his head on the glass window and tried to end his life," he added.

"He even tried to tear the official documents kept inside the police station when our officers stopped him. We took him to the hospital for treatment," said the officer.

"A case has been registered under sections 353 (assaulting or obstructing a public servant), 309 (attempt to commit suicide), 504 (intentional insult), 306 (obstructing public servant) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code," said KD Katkar, senior inspector.

"We are investigating if the accused is lunatic. We have asked his relatives to submit documents while he is recuperating at JJ Hospital," said Katkar.
