The Vikhroli police on Wednesday arrested a 28-year-old man in connection with a murder of a senior citizen who was found dead in her house on Tuesday morning. According to the police, the motive behind the murder is believed to be theft.

The accused has been identified as Melvin Pichai Selvin, a courier boy by profession, in connection with the murder of 65-year-old Mary Swamy, who was found dead in her home in a slum near Navghar Mithaghar in Mulund (E) on Monday morning.

According to the police, Swamy, who lived alone at her residence, on Tuesday, did not open her door and suspecting something amiss, the neighbours tried knocking at her door. When Swamy did not respond, the neighbours broke open the door and found Swamy lying on the floor motionless.

The locals immediately informed the Mumbai police control room, which dispatched a police patrolling van to the location. Swamy was rushed to the local hospital where she was declared dead before admission. "When our officers went to Swamy's residence we saw that blood was coming from her earlobes and we suspected that theft could be the motive behind the murder and accordingly launched our investigation," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone VII) Dr Vinay Rathod. He added, "In the course of our investigation, we also came to know that Swamy's gold chain and gold earrings worth Rs75,000 were missing."

On Tuesday, the police received information from their informers about Melvin who also happens to be relative of the deceased. "We had credible information about Melvin and based on that he was picked up from his residence in Bhandup. During sustained questioning, he confessed to his crime,' said Rathod. He added "We also recovered a cloth wire used by Melvin to strangulate Swamy."

Melvin was arrested and booked under section 302 (Murder), 397 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.
