According to the Sion police, Rajendraprasad Sharma (70), a native of Madhya Pradesh, was travelling from Ghatkopar to Tata Memorial hospital along with his two sons.
Travelling to seek medical treatment proved fatal for a senior citizen early on Sunday morning after the taxi in which he and his two sons were travelling collided head-on with a car on Sion flyover. The taxi driver too died on the spot after the collision.
According to the Sion police, Rajendraprasad Sharma (70), a native of Madhya Pradesh, was travelling from Ghatkopar to Tata Memorial hospital along with his two sons. Sharma had reportedly come to the city for his treatment and was living temporarily in Ghatkopar. "Sharma was seeking treatment for his leg at Tata Memorial hospital. On Sunday morning, he and his two sons hired a taxi in Ghatkopar to travel to the hospital in Parel. At around 8:30am when they were passing on the Sion flyover, a speeding car collided head-on with their taxi," said YC Gorade, senior police inspector, Sion police station.
The police said the deceased taxi driver has been identified as Gurnamsingh Sardarsingh (76).
"Sharma was seated next to driver Sardarsingh, both of whom were crushed in the accident. The taxi was so badly mangled that we had to use metal cutters to get the occupants out," said Gorade. The driver of the other car was identified as Vaibhav Manral (25). "Along with Manral, two men and three women were in the car. They were on their way to Panvel after visitng Siddhivinayak temple," he added.
Manral was northbound but was allegedly driving on a lane meant for the southbound vehicles. The occupants in the car also sustained minor injuries, the police said, adding that Manral was arrested on the spot itself.
