Malwani residents are crying foul against the lack of facilities at the nearest Abdul Kalam Azad BMC Maternity Hospital.

The hospital, that refuses to take in serious cases of emergency, also has no equipments to deal with patients that require special facilities. “This maternity hospital is only meant to conduct delivery procedures and we do not have equipments to cater to the patients’ serious illnesses. Therefore, most patients are transferred to the Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle,” said Priscy D Souza, the administrative staff. The huge three storey building that can easily accommodate many patients does not cater to even half of its capacity and is in a sorry state, complain Malwani residents.

When iamin visited the hospital, it was found that the hospital has only two doctors serving right now. Out of the two, one is on vacation and the other one comes to the hospital only for maximum of 3 hours, taking up only the most important cases. "We have staff problems, I admit that. The nurses treat the patients when the doctors are not there, which is almost all the time," added Priscy.

Not only is the hospital ill-equipped but it is also challenging for ambulances to enter the interior parts of Malwani. “The roads are very narrow; hence we have a lot of trouble taking patients in,” Priscy said.

The mothers visiting the hospital complain about the careless approach of the staff. “I was admitted for four days for a delivery. They did not do anything. Nurses kept saying that the best doctor would be reaching the hospital in some time. However, he never came. On the fourth day, they asked me to get all the tests done from outside and then asked me to shift to Kandivali’s Shatabdi Hospital as they did not have caesarian operation facilities,” said Shaista Siddhiqui, who had to later get the operation done in a private hospital.

Another Malwani resident Imran Saiyad recalled a similar incident and said, “There was a couple who lived here a year ago, and the woman went to the hospital when she was in labour pain. The hospital refused to treat her due to lack of facilities. On her way to another hospital, due to complications, both the mother and baby died in the auto-rickshaw. It is better they close down the hospital instead of misleading the people.”

Meanwhile, the doctors of the hospital remained unavailable for a comment.
