DRI have arrested Abdul Rehman Kunju, popularly known as Bechu Rehman, for his alleged involvement in a fake currency racket.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Mumbai, have arrested Malayalam film and teleserial actor Abdul Rehman Kunju, popularly known as Bechu Rehman, for his alleged involvement in a fake currency racket.
The 36-year-old actor was also arrested last year for allegedly blackmailing the Sabraimala temple priest. He was later released on bail. According to DRI sources, Rehman and Mohammad Rashid Kunju, 45, were the mastermind of a fake currency racket operating out of Dubai. The actor was arrested on January 4 from the airport after a passenger, Andumai Velikoth, a resident of Kerala, who arrived on Indian Airlines flight from Dubai handed over fake currency up to Rs 24.90 lakh to him.
“The DRI has specific information about a 35-year-old who would arrive with fake currency on the flight that landed at 6:30am. We followed Velikoth out of the airport. He reached a four-wheeler parked outside and handed the currency over to Rashid, who handles the fake currency circulation business in Mumbai,” the DRI official said.
He added that during the interrogation Velikoth said he was merely a courier of the currency.
“In turn, Rashid when questioned, told us that he acted on the instructions of Bechu Rehman who at the time was incarcerated at Kochi prison. On Thursday, he was brought to Mumbai and arrested by the DRI and produced in court for his involvement in the fake currency racket,’’ the official said.
Rehman was arrested along with three others for allegedly attacking the former priest of the Sabarimala temple Kandaraaru Mohanararu in July 2006. The police arrested the main accused, Sobha John, and two of her accomplices. The police claimed that Rehman had planned and arranged for a five-member gang to attack the priest to extort money from him after taking his pictures in a compromising position with a woman.
