Malad woman murdered at home, daughters identify murderer

A 32-year-old woman was found murdered at her Malad residence on Tuesday evening, and the police suspect robbery to be the motive behind the crime. The deceased, Shagufta Khan, lived in Rustomjee Reviera building at Adarsh Nagar, Marve Road with her two daughters.

When did the robbery take place?
The incident happened when Khan was alone at her sixth floor residence. Her daughters, aged 13 and 7, returned home at around 3pm and found the accused trying to escape with cash and valuables.
Balsingh Rajput, DCP, Zone 11, said: "The kids found the door ajar and saw the man, who is known to them, trying to escape. Seeing him, they ran away, which is when the accused made his escape."

When did the murder come to light?
A police officer said: "The woman's throat was slit and upon returning to the house later, the daughters found her in a pool of blood in the bedroom. The girls have identified the accused, who is currently on the run." When the two girls found the woman's body, they immediately called their father, who then called a few neighbours and relatives, who in turn, approached the Malad police.

How the cops connected the dots
The officer said that the suspect worked in a phone shop in Goregaon and was known to the deceased. Khan's husband, Sonu Jalaan, works in Australia. The officer said: "The accused and the owner of the phone shop were known to the victim. We are yet to ascertain on what work he had gone to the house. It could be a planned move to rob her. The rooms and cupboards have been ransacked and valuables missing. The worth of cash and valuables robbed is yet to be ascertained."

Husband arrested in IPL booking case in 2012
Jalaan is believed to be a bookie who was arrested along with four others in a high-profile IPL cricket booking case in 2012. He is on his way from Australia, informed the police.
"We have scanned CCTV footage and also questioned a number of people. The accused will be arrested soon. We have formed several teams to nab him," said Balsingh Rajput, DCP, Zone 11.
