Malad police nabs two in extortion case

Malad police have arrested two persons for allegedly extorting a man claiming to be crime branch officers. While one of the arrested persons is a chartered accountant, the other is a television journalist.

Those arrested have been identified as Amit Jain, the chartered accountant and Asif Ansari. Ansari works with a local television news channel. Jain is a chartered accountant and stays in Thane, while Ansari is a Malad resident.

According to the police, complainant Vitthal Singh (29) stays with his family in Marve in Malad. Singh works in the office of an open university in Malad. Between July 16 and 22, two unknown persons entered the office of Singh claiming to be crime branch officers, threatened him and took some office documents claiming that the they were bogus and that they would register a case against Singh.

"The duo demanded extortion of Rs5 lakh from Singh and took Rs2.50 lakh as the first instalment. They then kept on harassing Singh for the remaining amount. Singh then approached Malad police in this regard. We had got a CCTV footage of the incident and began searching for the suspects," said an officer from Malad police station.

On receipt of specific information, the duo were nabbed by the police. "Jain was having an affair with a bar girl and in order to shower money on her he wanted cash. With the help of Ansari, he decided to extort Singh. Jain has splurged a lot of extorted money on the bar girl," police said, adding that they are probing why Singh was targetted by them.
