The actual work for the complete face-lift of Sassoon Dock, one of the largest salt water fish market and landing harbours in Colaba, will start from October 1.

Union Minister for Ports Nitin Gadkari reviewed the progress of various projects under the Sagar Mala initiative and tried to remove the small hurdles in their way. Along with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Gadkari held a meeting on Tuesday with various departments and agencies involved in the projects.

Fadnavis informed DNA that now since the hurdles have been removed, the project can start in the coming days. He also said that the actual work will start soon after a detailed project report is prepared.

Vikas Deshmukh, the secretary to the department of animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries said that the State Fisheries Development Corporation has been appointed as the project's management and implementation consultant, and a detailed project report is expected to be ready by the end of August. He said that the tender process is likely to end by September 21, following which the actual work could start from October 1.

Gadkari also asked state ministers and officials to send as many proposals as possible for building jettys. Gadkari also proposed the idea of floating jettys so that they can provide a fillip to the fishing as well as tourism industry.

Sources said that the dock's makeover will involve fishing and tourism to go hand in hand. A ship museum, a new auction hall for fishermen, deepening of the basin and mechanisation of fish handling facilities at the dock is incorporated in the plan for the dock's makeover.

The fishing harbour sees fishermen from Mumbai, Karanja, Rewas, Alibag, Uran, Mora, Murud, Srivardhan and even from areas as far as Palghar and Thane bring their catch for sale to commission agents and exporters. It was built in 1875 on reclaimed land by David Sassoon and Company, owned by Albert Abdullah David Sassoon.
