Gilbert Hill, the unique rock formation that is estimated to be around 65 million years old has lately been bearing the brunt of encroachment. Since the last few years, this MCGM-declared Grade II heritage site is being gradually encroached by slums and illegal construction activities. After several complaints were made regarding the rock's deteriorating condition, the BMC has finally woken up. Last year, it had announced that measures will be taken to protect the hill.

After much delay, a meeting was held between BMC Commissioner Sitaram Kunte, Additional Municipal Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh and MLA Ameet Satam along with few other officials from other departments. MLA Satam shares, "I had written to Commissioner Kunte informing him that a Malin-like disaster awaits us at Gilbert Hill, if proper action is not taken. We are working on a five-fold programme, which will help to address multiple problems related to the hill."

The meeting turned out to be fruitful as a five-point plan to make the hill area safe and to convert it into a tourist attraction, is now in place. The plan focuses on the strengthening of the hill, getting rid of illegal encroachments at the foothill, constructing and maintaining a protective wall around the circumference of the hill, beautification of the access road to the hill and turning the entire area into a tourist attraction.
Satam adds, "This is a unique rock found in only two places in the world—one is the US and the other is here. Hence, we need to convert it into a tourist spot and also make it safe for the people living around here." This hill offers a panoramic view of the suburban part of the city. Residents around the area are extremely happy with the BMC's decision.

Popular urban planner P.K. Das and Professor D.N. Singh of IIT-Bombay are scheduled to meet on Sunday to come up with suitable plans for the hill. Everyone has pinned their hopes on this meeting as these two planners are known for their foresight and great work.

Environmental activist D Stalin shares, "It is a good idea that the hill is being protected as there are only seven hills left in the city. However, the way they do this is important, as going against nature's way of strengthening will not help."
