'Make in India' in mind, Information and Broadcasting enters 'Pride of India

The I&B stall at Pride of India exhibition in BKC

Did you know that India is the 5th largest country in wind energy production and aims to generate 20,000 MW power through solar plants by 2022? Did you know that 6.8% of the India's GDP comes from the tourism sector with over 1 billion domestic travellers and earns $18 billion of foreign exchange through foreign tourists? These highlights are the part of the exhibit set-up by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting in the 'Pride of India' exhibition, a part of Indian Science Congress at MMRDA ground in Bandra-Kurla Complex. The exhibit which presents important information about the key sectors, including the railways, ports, tourism, food processing, IT and BPO, renewable energy, highways and roads, aims at promoting the "Make in India" policy among the thousands of youngsters who are currently participating in the Congress.

Thonglanthung Patton (13), a class 9 student of Ministers Hill Baptise Higher Secondary School of Kohima (Nagaland), was among them. "I want to become a surgeon but I am interested to know how India is going to take shape in the next few years"

Thonglanthung is among over 5,000 youngsters who visited the I & B stall on Tuesday. "This is our first such exhibition at the Indian Science Congress. We are overwhelmed with the response, especially from women and youngsters in our first ever show at the ISC," said N Swamy, assistant director, directorate of advertising and visual publicity, I & B ministry.

Renewable energy and IT and BPO sectors seem to be attracting more visitors as there is a lot of enquiry about the investment in these area, said Swamy.

The ministry now plans to hold more such exhibitions across India to spread the message. Swamy said, "India aims to be self-reliant in next few years. The 'make in India' policy launched by the Narendra Modi government is a step towards achieving that dream. The government wants youngsters to be part of this growth story of India."

On Tuesday, the department organised a quiz competition on "Swachh Bharat" in which over 40 children participated.
