With just 16 days left to go for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Council (BMC) polls, the city's political landscape is experiencing a new development almost every day. As compared to the previous years, this time candidates who revolted against their parties are giving a tough time to official candidates.

While only few wards will witness a straight fought battle between registered political parties with three to four candidates, there are several wards which will have more than five candidates and still others that will have more than 15 candidates contesting. However, there is another ward where 36 candidates have decided to try their luck. The present equation may churn out an unexpected result and hence political parties have began campaigning aggressively.

Interestingly, ward 100 (Bandra west), ward 126 (Ghatkopar east) and ward 158 (Kurla west) are the only wards where three candidates from each ward will be contesting. However, the highest number of candidates filing their nominations are from ward 164 (Chandivli) where 36 aspirants are trying their luck. Apart from this, there at least 10 wards which will witness a four-cornered fight. But there are several wards which will witness a multi-cornered fight that is bound to keep all political parties on their toes.

Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party struck emotional chords with disappointed party workers. Different promises and explanations were given on ticket distribution by the respective party hierarchy to their disappointed aspirants and efforts are being made so that internal bickering does not affect campaigns and the final outcome. Until now the party workers were honouring the decisions by the highest leadership. However, with political aspirations and ambitions growing within the cadre, the number of party workers revolting is at an all-time high.

In Colaba ward 227, BJP candidate Makarand Narwekar will have to face 11 contestants while his sister-in-law Harshita Narwekar from the neighbouring ward will also have to face 11 other candidates. In Dadar's ward 194, Shiv Sena's official candidate Samadhan Sarwankar, son of ex-MLA Sada Sarwankar will have to face a total of 17 candidates including two rebel sainiks. Whereas, in Dadar's ward 197, 27 candidates have filed nominations.

In ward 77 (Jogeshwari East), sitting corporator Bala Nar will have to face 16 contestants including Shiv Sena's ex-corporator Shailesh Parab. In Mulund's ward 106, NCP's sitting corporator Nandu Vaity will have to battle it out with 23 other contestants. Likewise, Goregaon's ward 58 from where ex-deputy Mayor and senior leader Dilip Patel's son Sandeep is contesting is against as many as 20 candidates.

A senior official from the election department said that since the last day of withdrawing the nomination is on Tuesday, the total number of contestants should drop from the existing 2,634.
