Majority of the 55,000 suggestions, objections to Development Plan in bulk from a few areas

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) may have proudly announced receipt of 55,000 suggestions and objections for the draft development plan (DP) 2034, but the figure seems inflated as a majority have come in bulk from a few areas of the city. Suggestions/objections from individual citizens are less in comparison.

Until a few days ago, the number of suggestions/objections received, as told by civic officials, was dismally poor — 25,000. However, in the last week, the number seems to have swelled.

Sources claimed that this means the areas where more number of people have raised their voice will get priority, while individuals may be ignored.

Officials from BMC's DP department claimed that while all the suggestions and objections are in the process of being verified, at this point it will be difficult to pinpoint any particular suggestion being repeated. "We are in no position to bifurcate the entries. There are definitely a few bulk entries, but we will have to take a clinical approach towards all and make a note of them. Whether a suggestion or objection will be accepted or rejected will be at the sole discretion of the committee," said a senior engineer from the department.

Sources said there are more than 13,000 objections from Mahim Church authorities alone, where parishioners have objected to the DP remark of commercial use of the graveyard land. Similarly, more than 10,000 suggestions have been filed by residents of the Prabhadevi-Worli area, where they have demanded that out of the six municipal schools in the area, one be reserved to dispense medical services as there are no hospitals in the area.

Pali Hill Residents Association has filed 840 objections for the six roads planned by the BMC and marked in the draft DP. St Annes High School in the Pali Hill area has filed at least 2,000 objections to a road planned in the new DP, while people from Colaba, Dadar Hindu Colony, Parsi Colony, Matunga and Sion too have filed in bulk.
