International as well as domestic tourists have reasons to cheer. As part of making their travel smooth and worry-free, the Union ministry of tourism (MoT) has proposed attaching at least one dedicated tourist coach to major trains terminating or passing through important tourist destinations.

These coaches will have more facilities compared to normal ones and will be on par with international trains. Dr Mahesh Sharma, minister of state (independent charge) for tourism & culture and minister of state for civil aviation, said in Delhi that railways would collect complete information about passengers travelling in this coach before start of the journey.

Dr Sharma said safety and security of passengers are as important as cleanliness, and that the government was planning to introduce 'RFID cards' for passengers. "What we are planning is end-to-end tourism encompassing cleanliness, safety and security, and high level of hospitality for tourists," he said.

Without revealing details, the minister said the government, towards the end of this month, would announce a major initiative to improve the image of the country. He agreed that the recent incidents of sexual abuse involving travellers had brought "bad publicity" for the country, and said the government was committed to improving the safety and security systems.

As part of introducing Indian culture, heritage and destinations to the youth in the country, MoT is now working with the ministry of human resource development on 'Bharat Ko Jaano' programme, Dr Mahesh Sharma said.

A highly placed source in Rail Bhavan said: "Railway Board is contemplating the possibilities of a dedicated coach in major trains after Dr Sharma had announced it. It's not a big task, but we have to do a feasibility study before announcing it formally."
