For more than five years now, Ghatkopar residents have been fortunate enough to get a proper, motorable road on the 1km stretch --from Sarvoday Hospital to Jagdusha Nagar on the prominent Golibar Road in the eastern suburb.

According to residents, despite the road being in a poor condition for so many years, neither the civic body, nor the local politicians have been able to find permanent solution to the problem. What's more, the problem has aggravated since the onset of monsoons, with several craters cropping up on it.

"The road has been left in the worst possible condition for a long time. Not only the entire stretch is uneven, but potholes have also developed, making commuting impossible. Both the BMC and our local politicians, have completely neglected the road," said Bharat Gandhi, a resident.

Gandhi added that developing the stretch is crucial, as it not only connects to Jagdusha Nagar, Amrut Nagar, Geldar Nagar and the Rifle Range road, but also to three major industrial estates, including the Ghatkopar industrial estate.

"At times, we are forced to use the road if there is a heavy traffic congestion at the road connecting to LBS Marg, but it causes immense trouble to us, especially the senior citizens," added Gandhi.

Residents say it is a harrowing experience to commute on the road. "The alignment of your vehicle is damaged. Some of the two-wheeler commuters have developed severe back problems because of commuting on this stretch," said Haresh Sanghavi,56, another resident.

The frustration of the residents is justified. It was during Ganpati that the BMC had temporarily repaired the stretch and filled up some of the craters, residents informed.

"All of them have come back. We are running pillar to post to solve this problem as it is such a trouble for us, who would want to use the road frequently. But we don't see any of the authorities taking it seriously," said Ishita Shah, a regular commuter.

"The road below the adjacent metro bridge is also in such a pathetic condition," she informed.

Additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas, said, "There is a missing link. There was no road there initially, but once developed, it will be an important stretch that will connect to the main road. We will start work on that road soon and it should be completed within the next six to eight months."
