Maid steals Rs3.51 lakh from Belgian diplomat's house

The Gamdevi police on Thursday arrested a 45-year-old housemaid for allegedly stealing Rs3.51 from the house of Belgium vice councilor. The incident took place on Wednesday.
The arrested woman has been identified as Rita Johari.

According to the police, Johari used to work part time at the residence of the Belgian national, Josipina Joje Nirvonagiz.

On Wednesday the complainant, while rummaging through her cupboard, found Rs3.51 lakh missing. She searched other places in her house to check if he had kept the cash elsewhere but was convinced that it had been stolen. She then approached the Gamdevi police.

Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case of theft. The police asked the complainant as to who all would visit her. During the course of the investigations, the police found out that Johari had access to the complainant's house and had not reported to work since the theft occurred.

"We nabbed Johari from her residence in a slum area in South Mumbai and questioned her. During the questioning, she confessed to the crime ," said a police officer from Gamdevi police station.
The police recovered Rs87,000 from her house. Johari was produced in a court, which remanded her in police custody till May 3.
