After the Mahim police was pulled up by the Bombay High Court last year for violating noise pollution norms during the Mahim fair, this year the officials made sure they were not caught on the wrong foot on the first day of the fair that honours Sufi saint Makhdoom Ali Mahimi. The fair traditionally begins from the Mahim police station and is led by the cops.

Sumaira Abdulali, convenor, Awaaz Foundation visited Mahim police station on Sunday to take readings during the inaugural day of the annual 10-day festival and said that there were no loud musical instruments being played at the police station which was a regular affair until last year.

"There were no noise violations found at the police station and the procession was without the regular loudspeakers and brass band. However in the evening noise pollution from processions at Cadell Road, Mahim around 4.15 pm measured 122.5 dB which was way beyond the stipulated levels. The noise was stopped within 10 minutes of my complaining to the Mahim police station," said Abdulali.
