To streamline the medical education across the state, the Maharashtra university of health sciences (MUHS) has decided to bring in grading system for medical colleges, including that of dental, ayurveda, homeopathy and nursing. MUHS will also soon pass a resolution in the academic council about the need for accreditation council for the medical colleges.

Currently, only engineering and general colleges have grading system, which is done by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). There are 320 colleges affiliated with the MUHS. "We will soon propose to academic council the need for bringing in grading system in medical colleges. It is like NAAC inspection, were three-member expert team will visit the colleges. Currently, the same work is done by the local inspection committee. This team mainly sees what kind of academic activity and research are being conducted in the colleges," said Dr Arun Jamkar, vice-chancellor, MUHS.

Some of the senior doctors whom dna spoke to welcomed plans for bringing in grading system for the medical colleges. "There will be a more serious evaluation of the private medical colleges under a grading system. Most of the government medical colleges have been successful in maintaining standards. But some of the private medical colleges take it easy when it comes to maintaining the quality of the education. Some do not have full-time teaching staff while in some cases the teachers are not qualified enough. Also some of the medical colleges' infrastructure are not up to the mark," said a senior doctor on condition of anonymity.

Dr Shivkumar Utture, member of Maharashtra medical council (MMC) said, "This is a very welcome move. Through this system students will come to know which college is good for them. The system will rank the colleges in the state according to their standards. The committee will carry out inspection which will find out whether the colleges have the necessary infrastructure, staff strength and whether the teachers are qualified and are full-time faculty."
