Even as the state cabinet is likely to pass the compensation policy for rape and acid attack victims on Wednesday, the state government will set up trauma teams at district level to handle and counsel rape victims immediately after the assault.
The trauma team will be headed by the district civil surgeon. This is not all, the compensation policy for rape and acid attack victims will also be applicable to minor victims of sexual assault.
The state finance department had recently approved the proposal of paying compensation of a maximum of Rs3 lakh to rape and acid attack victims. The policy is not just restricted to paying compensation to the victims but also includes counseling, medical and legal help.
The compensation for victims ranges from Rs50, 000 to Rs2 lakh in normal cases and Rs3 lakh in severe and dangerous attacks.
According to an official of the women and child development department, 50 per cent of the compensation amount will be given to the victim immediately after an FIR is filed and the remaining amount will be paid after the accused are convicted.
“We will be providing this compensation to both male and female minors in cases of sexual assault. After a sexual assault, the trauma team is expected to counsel the victim. The team will provide all kinds of help to the victim,” said an official.
The state is expecting an expenditure of around Rs56 crore per year, given the number of cases of sexual assault and acid attacks registered in Maharashtra. Though the state is expected to pass the policy in the cabinet, the decision will not have a retrospective effect, i.e. it will be applicable to the cases that happen after it comes into effect.
