Ending the controversy over the supply of cattle feed, which was initially termed as donation, by the Mehsana Milk Federation, Gujarat, to drought-hit areas of Maharashtra last year, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has decided to pay for the fodder.

dna had reported on March 28 that the BJP government in Gujarat had pulled up the federation for making a donation to the Maharashtra government led by the Congress-NCP combine.

Responding to the report, Chavan stated on Saturday that his government would be paying Rs 22crore to the Mehsana body. "I do not want the farmers of Gujarat to be harassed by their government even though they had showed a noble gesture towards the cattle in Maharashtra," he said.

Chavan said, "As a government, we should be generous and kind to people irrespective of their community and caste. I will use the chief minister's fund to return the money spent by the Mehsana Milk Federation. I hope it will put an end to their trouble."

The federation had donated cattle feed worth Rs 22 crore for use by nine lakh animals in drought-hit areas of the state in 2013. However, the good work cost the federation dear as the Gujarat government slapped corruption charges against it and registered an FIR.

"We are happy with Chavan's decision," said Manikrao Thakre, president of the Maharahstra Pradesh Congress Committee.

Thakre said the vindictive action by the Gujarat government showed the true nature of its chief minister Narendra Modi, who is BJP's prime ministerial candidate.

"If the person cannot spare even animals, then he will not spare anyone. It is the height of cruelty and unkindness. People should think twice before voting for such a person and his party. After the dna report, the MPCC urged Chavan to pay for the fodder," said Thakre.
