For first time, in the state, a Municipal Council that too from rural Maharashtra will have homes for the specially abled, which will be ready within the next three months under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna.

Washim Municipal Council's proposal has been approved by the state's appraisal committee and also from the central committee. The proposal was also praised in the centre's meeting where it was passed.

It proposed construction of 101 homes all for disabled. Ganesh Shete, the chief officer of Washim Municipal Council, is the man behind the idea. When contacted, Shete said, "The work has begun and these homes for the differently abled people will be provided within three months."

A senior official from state's PMAY department said, "The proposal was passed in one meeting in the first committee. This is the first proposal concerning homes for physically challenged people and it has been praised a lot at all levels."

Under PMAY, the centre and state government contribute Rs 2.5 lakh for every beneficiary to buy a house. The size of the homes for the Economically Weaker Section is 30 square meters. The project in Washim came into existence after Shete and his team organised a regular workshop for the differently abled people in the city which provided them with information about all the schemes from the central government such as insurance, medical help and others. After this, the council conducted a special survey in the city to identify, the number of disabled people in the city and their housing status. According to the survey, around 110 to 120 people have land but not proper homes, or no homes at all. Hence, the council came up with this proposal.

The Municipal Council has found a way to financially help the proposed beneficiaries. The government will help with Rs 2.5 lakh.
