If you are a woman living in Thane, then you need to be extra cautious about your safety. The latest government data sourced from the women and child department lists the district on top of the chart for registering cases of rapes, child molestation and acid attack.

As per the data, in between October 2013 and April 2015, the district registered 512 cases out of total of 3,523 cases under section 376 (rape), Protection of Children against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and acid attack cases across Maharashtra.

Next in line is Mumbai Suburb, which saw 355 complaints against the said sections, followed by Mumbai city that registered 144 cases.

These figures are significantly low in smaller regions like Akola, where only 20 cases were registered in the last 1.6 years. Similarly, 27 cases under were registered in Hingoli and 32 cases were registered in Ahmednagar.

"The numbers are on the higher side in the urban areas as more victims here are coming forward and registering complaints, whereas in smaller towns victims hesitate in registering the police complaints. The rise in numbers does not necessarily mean there is a rise in cases. However, women safety is always on our priority list," said a senior police officer, on the condition of anonymity.

Sources in women and child department claimed that the department has taken a serious view of the situation and is working on the plans that can ensure safety of women and child in the state.

"There are several projects in the pipeline like increasing the number of women resource centers, starting the 181-helpline, identifying the dark spots and also, conducting general awareness campaigns," said a senior government officer, requesting anonymity.

Meanwhile, sources in home department said the chief minister, Devendra Fadnavis, on June 17 had held a day-long meeting with the police commissioners and SPs of the state directing them to increase the visibility of the police across the state to improve overall law and order situation.

"Women and child safety was discussed at length during this meeting and directions have been issued to the heads of each district to do the best to control such crimes," said BK Upadhya, additional secretary (home).

Earlier in the year, a similar data released by the Union minister of women and child development, Maneka Gandhi, which had earned Maharashtra a dubious distinction of recording the most number of cases of rape and assault on women among the rest of the Indian states. The state topped the chart with as many as 13,827 cases in 2014 followed by Madhya Pradesh – 13,323 and Andhra Pradesh – a 13,267.
