Maharashtra start-up Ketto wins Wharton India contest

Maharashtra-based start-up Ketto, a crowd-funding platform for social and personal causes, was chosen as the winner of the Grand Prize Award the Wharton India start-up competition.

Set-up by Varun Sheth, actor Kunal Kapoor and Zaheer Adenwala, Ketto claims to have helped raise Rs10 crore till now, through online campaigns and a network of supporting companies.

It received a cash prize of $30,000. In addition to the cash prize and 150 hours of legal advice from Khaitan and Company , Ketto will get an opportunity to pitch to a significantly larger international audience in a Philadelphia event.

The finals were held in Mumbai on Tuesday. The start-up competition was a part of the 20th Wharton Indian Economic Forum (WIEF), which is slated to be held on March 25 in Philadelphia.

Two other start-ups – Pratilipi, Amazon's kindle direct publishing for Indian languages, and Singapore-based Trebene, an ethical luxury label of cashmere scarfs from Kashmir – won the Powerhouse Awards in the competition. Pratilipi got a cash prize of $25,000 and Trebene was given $15,000.

Hyderabad based Kheyti, a social enterprise that is trying to turn small farmers into "smart" farmers won the People's Choice Award. These start-ups competed from a pool of 10 finalists, which had earlier gone through a three level screening process. The competition had received over 750 applications from a wide range of industries – both for profit and social ventures.
