The Director of Primary Education, Pune on Thursday directed education officials across the state to take strong legal action on schools which were slapped with notices for showing fake students during the 2011 census of students. It may be recalled that funds running into several crores meant for scholarships of SC, ST and OBC students were siphoned off between 2008-09 and 2013-14. A special investigative team (SIT) even submitted its report last year. The SIT asked the Social Justice Department to lodge FIRs against 68 education institutions and recover the funds from them. The errant educational institutions were in Chandrapur, Beed, Osmanabad, Pune and Solapur.

When contacted, director of primary education, Sunil Chauhan did not comment on the matter.

The Bombay High Court’s Aurangabad bench was upset that no legal action had been initiated against the institutions that were involved in the fraud. After the HC rap, the director of Primary Education Department instructed all the education inspectors, officials from social justice department and other government officials to take legal action on school management, principal, teacher and staff that are involved in the fraud. The education department will send a detailed report to the Bombay High Court’s Aurangabad bench within two days.

Prashant Redij, secretary, Mumbai Principals Association said that the education department should first cross facts again with the schools that were slapped notices and only then take legal action. “According to our knowledge, the 2011 census on state schools was not done properly,” he said.

Another teacher and president of Mumbai North Shikshak Parishad, Anil Bornare said, “Since it’s a Bombay High Court order, it needs to be followed. But the education department should make sure the innocents are not penalised in this.”
