The Navi Mumbai police are on the look out for two people, including an unidentified man, in the murder of Meenakshi Jaiswal, former chairperson of Maharashtra state child rights commission. A total of two accused involved in the crime are now on the run.

Jaiswal, 46, was hacked to death by the suspects in the evening of December 19 when she was alone in her flat at Celebration Complex in Kharghar. After killing her, the assailants ran away with cash and jewellery worth Rs 2.5 lakh. The police arrested two people, including the mastermind of the crime, within a few hours from the same area.

Fateh Singh Patil, additional commissioner of police of Navi Mumbai, said that the investigating officers have not found any trace of professional rivalry as the motive for the crime.

Sunil Bajare, senior inspector of Navi Mumbai crime branch, said the first absconder has been identified as one Suraj, a carpenter by profession and a native of Uttar Pradesh. "Suraj accompanied arrested accused Maninder Singh Bajwa into the Jaiswal's flat," said Sunil Bajare.

Both Suraj and Bajwa had previously worked at Jaiswal's house as electricians. They had been introduced to her through one Vinayak Chavan, 45, who hails from the same village in Yavatmal district as the victim. Chavan regularly visited the flat to do odd jobs like driving, carpentry and electrical works. On the day of the murder, he stood guard outside the building.

"During interrogation Bajwa's and Chavan have revealed that a fourth person was also involved in the crime. We are now searching for Suraj and the fourth persons and hope to get hold of them soon," Bajare said.

Meanwhile, the Belapur magistrate has remanded Chavan and Bajwa in police custody till December 24 by. Bajwa is reportedly addicted to narcotics. Chavan is a history sheeter with three criminal cases registered against him.
