Maharashtra: Resident doctors complain of medicine shortage in state-run hospitals

While earlier the medical authority used to stock medicines for three months, they have now started to keep a stock for a week.

The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has been complaining over the shortage of medicines in various government hospitals across the state. As per the doctors, some of the state-run hospitals lack in the supply of medicines and equipment. Such hospitals can be found in cities like Nagpur, Satara, Miraj, Nanded, and even Mumbai.

According to Central MARD, they have written over three letters in a year, regarding the issue. Dr Lokesh Chirwatkar, President of Central MARD, said, "The demand and supply of surgical and non-surgical medicines and equipment in most of the government medical colleges and hospitals are not maintained systematically by the authority. We have been receiving complaints from nearby clinical departments that many of the medicines which are essential for patients are not available in our hospital."

Essential medicines that are usually not available in the clinical department of the hospital include — Injection adrenaline, injection atropine, meropenem, Levoflox, Lilnezolide, Methylprednisolone, Lorezepam, Penzyl to name a few.

According to the resident doctors, the bed ratio has not yet increased when compared to the footfall of patients. "Basic laboratory material, blood test material are not available in state-run hospitals located in rural cities," saidd Dr Lokesh.
